“It’s true that as a young undergraduate student, there’s ample room for experimentation. However, it’s more advisable to experiment purposefully. You could think that if I’m proficient in mathematics, then I could spend a summer doing research, and if academia doesn’t suit me, perhaps I could combine the math skill with a few courses in computer science to be a specialist in artificial intelligence (deep learning). Do you see how the experimentation is based on an assessment of your strength, and arranged with a fail-safe plan? I haven’t had much planning until I started working, but I know had I planned properly, I could have gone further in my career. Planning and experimenting are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are complementary to each other.”

“If you’re truly not enjoying a course or program of study, you can do something about it! University is such a great time to explore and figure out what you like (and, more importantly, what you don’t like).”

“Don’t let the academic bureaucracy or the size of UofT overwhelm you. Your GPA and grades don’t matter as much as you think; A small hiccup here or there will not have the disastrous consequences on your future that you may be dreading.”

“Learn as much as you can during your undergraduate years! Make many types of friends, and participate in a wide variety of activities. You never know when a person or an experience can guide your future endeavors.”
