“1. Keep taking on new challenges. I learned almost as much from my extracurricular activities and student jobs as I did from my undergraduate degree.
2. Mental health is important. Take care of yours and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
3. If you want to go to graduate school or a post-secondary program, it’s usually important to make sure you keep your marks up. You may not be thinking about this in first or second year, but it never hurts to try and keep those doors open in future.
4. If something is not working, don’t be afraid to switch programs. I did that after second year and it was a great decision for me.“

“Get more involved in extra curricular groups and events. I didn’t have the mentoring programmes you have, so I would use those as well to speak with mentors and get tips and advice.“

“The university is a diverse place with diverse people. Take advantage of that by learning from those around you and engaging in the immense variety of opportunities. Whatever you do, do not just stay in your room and study; the world requires you to do much more than describe the Theory of Relativity or the stylistic prose of Mark Twain.”

“Get involved outside the classroom earlier. Focus on what study skills suit you best, which frees up time for clubs, work, or research opportunities.”
” Work hard and trust the process. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and believe in your own abilities to excel. It won’t always be an easy ride, but if you cultivate a strong work ethic, it will support your academic, professional, and personal development. “

New College Impact |
Participation in a First-Year Learning Community (FLC), frosh week most years, New Links mentorship program, and other events helped me with making friends on a large campus and made my U of T experience much more enjoyable. |

“Become engaged in your 2nd year with Executive Committees, groups, networking, and personal health. Looking back, becoming so engaged in my 4th year was amazing; however I should have been using the numerous opportunities U of T offered throughout my four years.
These include resume and cover letter workshops, editorial help, public speaking, networking opportunities within my Faculty / Department and externally through other Departments, industry events etc. The opportunities offered through the University are first-class. Do not take those for granted or wait till the last year like I did. “
