“Become engaged in your 2nd year with Executive Committees, groups, networking, and personal health. Looking back, becoming so engaged in my 4th year was amazing; however I should have been using the numerous opportunities U of T offered throughout my four years.

These include resume and cover letter workshops, editorial help, public speaking, networking opportunities within my Faculty / Department and externally through other Departments, industry events etc. The opportunities offered through the University are first-class. Do not take those for granted or wait till the last year like I did. “

“Seek internships and job shadowing opportunities. The more exposure you get to professional life, the better. Start networking, and start networking early. It’s most effective to network when you don’t need anything from them – when the pressure is off. If you start networking once you’re finished your degree and looking for a job, you’ll be too focused on that to make the most of it.

All that being said, cherish the theoretical courses that U of T has to offer. Once you do get out into the “real world”, it’s hard to find the time to reflect critically about your chosen field.

“Do what you love and get involved in something outside of the classroom. If there isn’t a club on campus that fits your particular interests, start one yourself!”
