“I would tell myself that it’s OK not to have everything figured out, and that study/research skills, personal development, and cultivation of hard work and curiosity are all more important than the details of my program and course choices. Also, I would have told my younger self that success at any endeavour is just the tip of a large iceberg, the remainder of which almost no one will ever see.

“Take the time and always be curious. Asking questions denotes intelligence and only helps you figure out the path you want to take! Also find a small group of mentors for yourself so you get the following:

1) Varied opinions through varied experience
2) Someone to help tease through your thought process and bounce ideas off – it will help ground the ideas you want most.
3) Never stop learning. Always look to do more for yourself – its a big journey so learn as much as you can.
4) Take time to not work and be okay with exploring you outside of a career – you will surprise yourself!

“Become engaged in your 2nd year with Executive Committees, groups, networking, and personal health. Looking back, becoming so engaged in my 4th year was amazing; however I should have been using the numerous opportunities U of T offered throughout my four years.

These include resume and cover letter workshops, editorial help, public speaking, networking opportunities within my Faculty / Department and externally through other Departments, industry events etc. The opportunities offered through the University are first-class. Do not take those for granted or wait till the last year like I did. “

“Get involved as much as you can. School is the time to learn, but not only in the classroom. There is so much opportunity on campus, it is important to find your passions and develop yourself. Once you get out of your comfort zone, you realize that things aren’t so scary.”
