“1. Keep taking on new challenges. I learned almost as much from my extracurricular activities and student jobs as I did from my undergraduate degree.
2. Mental health is important. Take care of yours and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
3. If you want to go to graduate school or a post-secondary program, it’s usually important to make sure you keep your marks up. You may not be thinking about this in first or second year, but it never hurts to try and keep those doors open in future.
4. If something is not working, don’t be afraid to switch programs. I did that after second year and it was a great decision for me.“

“Get more involved in extra curricular groups and events. I didn’t have the mentoring programmes you have, so I would use those as well to speak with mentors and get tips and advice.“

“Don’t be too focused on what you want to do after U of T – enjoy your time there and learn as much as you can. What comes next will come together naturally, and will be informed by your academic interests, peers, and community involvement. Do work that matters.”

“Begin constructing your network, which sounds easy, but the devil is in the details of how to build outward from family and friends so as to avoid cold calls. Get a job, any job, to gain work experience – particularly if it is out of the retail sector where one gets little sense of what the larger organization is about. The difference between students with work experience and without work experience is visible.”

“Take advantage of every opportunity that arises. Apply for everything you are interested in, as there is a better chance of getting accepted than you think. Optimise your time to take advantage of all the resources you have available to you.”
