“It’s true that as a young undergraduate student, there’s ample room for experimentation. However, it’s more advisable to experiment purposefully. You could think that if I’m proficient in mathematics, then I could spend a summer doing research, and if academia doesn’t suit me, perhaps I could combine the math skill with a few courses in computer science to be a specialist in artificial intelligence (deep learning). Do you see how the experimentation is based on an assessment of your strength, and arranged with a fail-safe plan? I haven’t had much planning until I started working, but I know had I planned properly, I could have gone further in my career. Planning and experimenting are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are complementary to each other.”

“Build thing(s) you care about, do things even if you can’t do them on your own, learn to work with others. take the courses that you’re most afraid of, do the homework, ask for help when you need it. Go to office hours and talk to your professors about things that you care about. Learn from people who you respect.”

“Looking back at my Innis College experience I would advise students to get involved as much as possible. Getting involved in clubs and associates such as athletics, frosh week, or the ICSS, provides ample opportunities to make good connections while fully engaging in all that U of T and Innis has to offer.”

“Get involved with new things that excite you! Don’t feel stuck in one area (in academics or extra-curriculars). U of T is a great place to try new things, meet new people, and grow. While it’s great to do well academically, getting A’s isn’t the sole importance of going to University.”

“Do what you love and get involved in something outside of the classroom. If there isn’t a club on campus that fits your particular interests, start one yourself!”
